What Is Balance Testing?

Balance testing includes diagnostic exams used to evaluate how the inner ear, eyes, nerves, and brain work together to control balance. Since the inner ear plays an important role in balance, certain ear-related conditions can cause dizziness, spinning sensations, nausea, imbalance, or difficulty walking steadily. These tests help determine whether symptoms are connected to conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, Meniere’s disease, inner ear inflammation, or other vestibular disorders. The results can help locate the source of the problem and decide what treatment or further testing may be needed.

Is Balance Testing
RIGHT FOR YOU?

Balance testing may be recommended if you experience dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, or repeated episodes of feeling off balance. It is especially helpful when symptoms are frequent, unexplained, triggered by head movement, or associated with ear symptoms such as hearing loss, pressure, or ringing.

Who is a Candidate?

You may be a candidate if you have spinning sensations, sudden dizziness, imbalance while walking, nausea with movement, frequent falls, motion sensitivity, or dizziness when turning in bed or changing position. Balance testing may also be useful if you have dizziness with ear fullness, tinnitus, hearing changes, headaches, or a history of inner ear problems.

Why Is It Done?

The procedure is done to locate the possible cause of dizziness or balance problems. It helps determine whether the symptoms are coming from the inner ear, another vestibular pathway, or a condition that may require additional medical evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation.

How it Works

  • Symptom review and ENT examination — Dr. Dyrmishi begins by reviewing when your dizziness started, what triggers it, how long episodes last, and whether you have hearing loss, tinnitus, nausea, headaches, ear pressure, or balance difficulty.
  • Balance and vestibular assessment — Specific tests may be performed to evaluate eye movements, head movement responses, body balance, and positional triggers. These tests help identify patterns that may point to an inner ear or vestibular disorder.
  • Additional testing if needed — Depending on your symptoms, Dr. Dyrmishi may recommend hearing testing, imaging, neurological evaluation, or other diagnostic exams to rule out related conditions and confirm the source of the problem.
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning — Once the results are reviewed, Dr. Dyrmishi explains the likely cause and recommends the next step. Treatment may include repositioning maneuvers, medication, vestibular rehabilitation, lifestyle guidance, or further specialist care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can balance problems really come from the ear?

Yes. The inner ear contains the vestibular system, which helps the body understand movement and position. When this system is irritated, inflamed, or not working properly, it can cause vertigo, dizziness, imbalance, nausea, or sensitivity to movement. Balance testing helps determine whether the ear is involved.

Should I avoid driving if I have balance problems?

If your dizziness or vertigo is sudden, unpredictable, or affects your ability to focus and react, it may be safer to avoid driving until you have been evaluated. Balance symptoms can increase the risk of accidents or falls. Dr. Dyrmishi can advise you based on the cause, severity, and frequency of your episodes.

What is the difference between dizziness and vertigo?

Dizziness is a general term that can describe lightheadedness, unsteadiness, weakness, or feeling faint. Vertigo is more specific and usually feels like spinning or movement when you are still. This distinction is important because vertigo is often linked to inner ear conditions, while dizziness can have many possible causes.

Can balance issues be treated without surgery?

Yes. Many balance problems related to the inner ear can be treated without surgery. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include repositioning maneuvers for positional vertigo, medication for inflammation or nausea, vestibular rehabilitation exercises, hydration and diet guidance, or monitoring over time.
