Neck Lift

The neck is one of the first areas of the face to show the effects of ageing, yet it is often overlooked in conversations about facial rejuvenation. Loose skin, banding, and the accumulation of fat beneath the chin can significantly age a person’s appearance — even when the rest of the face looks relatively youthful. A neck lift addresses these concerns directly, restoring a clean, defined profile that brings the face and neck back into harmony.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, known medically as a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, tightens the underlying neck muscles, and eliminates unwanted fat to restore a smoother, more defined neckline. It can address a range of concerns including a “turkey wattle” appearance caused by loose hanging skin, prominent vertical neck bands (platysmal banding), a poorly defined jawline, and the accumulation of submental fat beneath the chin. The procedure can be performed alone or as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan alongside a facelift.

Is a Neck Lift
RIGHT FOR YOU?

A neck lift is a highly targeted procedure that delivers some of the most striking improvements in facial rejuvenation — but it works best when it is matched to the right patient and the right set of concerns.

Who is a Candidate?

Good candidates for a neck lift are men or women — typically in their 40s to 70s — who are bothered by visible signs of neck ageing such as skin laxity, banding, or submental fullness, and whose concerns are not adequately addressed by non-surgical options. Candidates should be in good general health, maintain a stable weight, be non-smokers or willing to quit well ahead of surgery, and hold realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.

Why Is It Done?

Patients seek a neck lift when the neck and jawline have lost the definition that once framed their face cleanly. This may be due to natural ageing, significant weight loss, genetics, or a combination of factors. For many patients, the neck is the feature that most noticeably dates their appearance — and correcting it alone can produce a surprisingly comprehensive improvement to the overall face and profile.

How it Works

  • Consultation and planning — Dr. Dyrmishi assesses the degree of skin laxity, muscle banding, and fat distribution in your neck and jaw to design a surgical plan that targets your specific concerns with precision.
  • The surgery — Incisions are placed discreetly behind the ears and sometimes under the chin; the platysma muscle is tightened, excess fat removed or repositioned, and loose skin carefully redraped and trimmed.
  • Immediate recovery — A compression garment is worn around the neck in the days following surgery to support healing; swelling and bruising are expected and typically resolve significantly within two weeks.
  • Long-term results — The full result becomes visible at around six to eight weeks, with most patients enjoying a defined, rejuvenated neckline for seven to ten years or more.

Faqs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a neck lift be combined with a facelift?

Yes, and the two procedures are very commonly performed together. Because the lower face and neck are anatomically continuous, addressing both in a single operation often produces the most balanced, harmonious result. Combining procedures also means a single anaesthetic and a single recovery period, which many patients prefer. Dr. Dyrmishi will advise during your consultation whether a combined approach is appropriate for your goals.

Will I need to wear a compression garment after surgery?

Yes. A supportive compression garment is typically worn around the neck and jaw for one to two weeks following surgery. It helps reduce swelling, supports the newly repositioned tissue, and encourages the skin to adhere smoothly to the underlying structures. Dr. Dyrmishi’s team will provide full guidance on how and when to wear it as part of your post-operative care plan.

Does a neck lift address fat under the chin as well as loose skin?

It can address both. Where submental fat is present, Dr. Dyrmishi may incorporate liposuction or direct fat removal as part of the procedure to refine the area beneath the chin and sharpen the jaw-neck angle. In some patients with excess fat but good skin elasticity, liposuction alone may be sufficient — this will be assessed thoroughly during your consultation.

How soon after surgery can I exercise and return to normal activity?

Light daily activity can typically resume within the first week, and most patients return to desk-based work within ten to fourteen days. More strenuous exercise — including anything that significantly raises the heart rate or involves heavy lifting — should be avoided for four to six weeks to minimise swelling and protect the healing tissue. Dr. Dyrmishi will provide a personalised timeline based on your recovery progress.
